Rudraprayag. The work of repairing the old 68 meter long tunnel connecting Kedarnath and Kedarghati to the district headquarters has been completed in two phases. The tunnel has been strengthened with a new look with shortcit technology. Besides, adequate light has also been arranged inside the tunnel, so that vehicles will be easily operated at night. Treatment of the hills on both sides of the tunnel is also being done by NH so that there is no danger of falling stones from the hill on rain and other occasions. Four crore rupees have been spent on this work. In the decade, a 68 -meter long tunnel was built by cutting the hill just above the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini. With the help of this tunnel, the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund highway was connected to the district headquarters. But after the tunnel was built, it was not taken care of, which made it dilapidated. In the year 2017-18, brick and cement blocks in the rounding area of the tunnel started coming out. Then all the blocks in half of the tunnel were removed from the National Highway Construction Block. Later, an action plan was prepared for permanent repair of the tunnel with the help of THDC experts. Shortcit technology was done in two phases to strengthen the tunnel and the tunnel was repaired.
The work of improvement of the old tunnel is almost complete. The inner part of the tunnel has been completed. Work on the outer side is going on, which will be completed in the next 15 days. Adequate lighting has been made inside the tunnel, so that vehicles will be able to operate easily at night. – Onkar Pandey, Executive Engineer, National Highway Construction Block, Lonivi.
